He identifies his music as outlaw country so although a lot of the instruments are the same, it is an overall more extreme sound with far more controversial lyrical content.Īlthough it does not have as wide appeal as traditional country in Waylon's homeland, there is still definitely a demand for the live show and Shooter has always commanded a steady following. It was perhaps destined for Waylon Albright "Shooter" Jennings to become a country music star in his own right after being born to two icons of the genre, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. I would gladly go to another Shooter concert and highly recommend any fan of country or rock and roll do the same. We were able to get a table in the back, enjoy some drinks, and listen to some great country and rock and roll. This guy wants to play you some good music while you enjoy a beer, and that is exactly what makes him so great. That would be completely against the outlaw country image. When you go in, expect to hear good music, but do not expect him to dance around the stage, have elaborate sets, or something like that. There are not a lot of frills to a Shooter Jennings show either. He played plenty of his own songs, a few of his dad Waylon’s, and what I think was even a Grateful Dead cover. You can really see what a talented musician he is live as he plays various guitars, the piano, an organ, and even a banjo. He was better live than he was on his records. I loved his albums but was not sure how good his live performance would be. I saw him a few weeks ago at the Bluebird in Bloomington, Indiana, and was extremely impressed.
Shooter Jennings is bringing outlaw country to a whole new generation. After nearly a decades experience on the road there a few country artists who can tear it up live the way he can and with a back catalogue like his to boot, Shooter Jennings comes highly recommended. Shooter is an artist of such quality that he deserves to be as far from the shadow of his dad as can be, but it’s still the truth. It does the man a disservice to say that his daddy would be proud of him. Since then he’s been releasing consistently acclaimed albums and touring like there’s no tomorrow. 357’s and recorded his solo debut, the charmingly titled “Put The O Back In Country”.

It was too good an opportunity to pass up, after the concert he formed a full time backing band, called them the. It was going to happen at some point and after a couple of weeks in New York City clearing his head, he got an invite to play a concert at the House of Blues. However Jennings dissolved the band in 2003, in order to focus on a solo career. The band were together for two years, building up a strong cult following in that time and releasing an acclaimed album in the process.
At the time his father had been off the road for a while, based in Nashville, but after high school was over he upped sticks to L.A and formed the awesomely named Stargunn. Rather than take after his father, however, he discovered rock and roll and decided to take the sleazy hard rock of Guns N’ Roses and merge it with the southern rock licks of Lynyrd Skynyrd. By the age of five he’d taken up the drums, by 8 he was taking piano lessons and hating every moment of them, but it was at the age of fourteen that he picked up the guitar and found his voice. Needless to say, music was always an enormous part of Shooter’s upbringing. However, if that authenticity was all he had it would mean nothing at all, so it’s just as well that he’s much, much more than Waylon’s boy. He was born on the road and that’s where he’ll live and die. He dodges the eternal irony of the wayfarin’ American country singer, since most of them would love you to think that their home is the open road but they’ll still have a deathless love for the state they grew up in. He spent the first few years of his life sleeping in a crib on his dad Waylon’s tour bus, and because of that, he’s never seemed to have a home beyond “The south” as a whole.
While many bands and artists get the touring bug after years of slogging around a variety of countries in a splitter van, Jennings was born into it in the most literal sense possible. Where they were born, where they were brought up, anything like that, however, Shooter Jennings is an altogether different beast.
